Why MJR Love?
According to a recent Gallup poll, younger people in the U.S. are identifying as LGBTQ+ at steadily increasing rates compared to previous generations. More than 1 in 5 members of Generation Z (those born between 1997 and 2012) identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. We can expect that this trend will continue for Generation Alpha (those born after 2012), the generation currently in elementary and middle school.
As the LGBTQ+ population grows, it is essential that schools and other youth-centric environments are prepared to meet the needs of queer youth. In order for all young people to access learning environments that affirm their intersectional identities, teachers and other adults working closely with young people need adequate training.
Families of LGBTQ+ youth also need resources and community as they navigate supporting their children. Research notes that LGBTQ+ youth face a myriad of interconnected challenges in and out of the classroom. Together, we have an obligation to work to ensure that LGBTQ+ youth have every opportunity to access education and develop into happy, successful adults.
